Introduction
The Project
Brigg Renewable Energy Plant would be a biomass fired power station which aims to generate 40 megawatts (40MW) of power by burning straw.
240,000 tonnes of straw would be required each year. This will be sourced from producers within a 50 mile radius of the facility (most significantly closer). Contracts for fuel supply will be long term and result in an annual investment of well over £6 million per year into the local agricultural economy.
The plant would be able to accept a modest proportion of other biomass, for example wood, which would be delivered to the site as chippings. All fuels used at Brigg REP must be clean and uncontaminated by substances such as paints, resins or preservatives; this eliminates fuels such as municipal waste, poultry litter or mixed wood waste.
The Site
Eco2 hopes to redevelop 5.3 hectares of land that was formerly occupied by British Sugar’s Brigg works.
The site lies approximately 800 metres east of the B1206 Scawby Road and 500 metres west of the River Ancholme. It is located approximately 1.5 kilometres south-west of Brigg Town and 1.8 kilometres east of Scawby. The smaller village of Scawby Brook is around 600 metres to the north-west. The site is fairly flat and stands at a level of circa 3-4m AOD.
The site is bordered to the north by Scawby Beck, a well maintained stream. There are a few mature trees on the west, north and east borders of the site. Beyond Scawby Beck lies an area that was once the settling lagoons associated with the sugar beet factory. These are now backfilled and have become naturally covered by rough grass and scrub. There are arable fields to the east and west. South of the site is Glanford Brigg gas fired power station.
The surrounding area is quite flat and the site can be seen from some distance. However, local features such as the trees bounding the site, break up the views. In terms of context, the villages of Brigg and Scawby have few direct views, due to intervening trees that provide a reasonable degree of screening. From the south of the site the existing power station is visually dominant and screens many views towards the REP site.
The Developer
Brigg Renewable Energy Plant is being developed by Eco2 Limited, which is a company that specialises in developing, financing and operating renewable energy projects throughout the UK and across many technology sectors.
In this case, the planning application has been submitted by Eco2 North Lincs Ltd, which is one of Eco2's biomass companies.
